Filters · 5 Micron and Above

Basket filters

A basket filter is installed inline ahead of a meter, control valve, heat exchanger or downstream process stage, and retains solids from five micron upward according to the element selected. Manufactured in simplex and duplex configuration, fabricated from plate or supplied in cast construction in the smaller sizes.

Where a strainer is specified to protect a pump from debris, a basket filter is specified to achieve a defined cut point. That distinction governs the design. The element carries a mesh lining sized to the required retention, the housing is dimensioned to give sufficient dirt holding capacity between cleaning intervals, and the clean and dirty pressure drop are both stated in the offer.

Construction & Types

Four variants, one operating principle

Simplex Standard duty

A single housing and element. The most economical configuration, applicable where the line may be isolated for the period required to clean or exchange the element.

Duplex Continuous duty

Two chambers with a changeover valve, permitting element cleaning without interrupting flow. Described in full on the duplex filter page.

Fabricated Larger sizes

Rolled and welded from plate, constructed to ASME Sec VIII Div 1 where the duty requires. Applied in larger sizes, at higher pressures, and wherever a specific material or non standard dimension is called for.

Element construction Selected on duty

Perforated sheet lined with wire mesh to the required retention, wedge wire where the duty is abrasive or the element is cleaned frequently, or perforated sheet alone for coarse retention.

Grades routinely handled

Carbon Steel SS 304 SS 304L SS 316 SS 316L

Alloy steel, duplex stainless and other grades are quoted against the process fluid. Element material is selected independently of the body, and internal polishing is available where the duty requires a cleanable finish.

FAQ

Common questions

Basket filters are applied to inline filtration against a defined cut point: the element carries a mesh lining sized to the required retention and the housing is dimensioned for dirt holding capacity between cleaning intervals. Pot strainers are applied to coarse and medium retention at pump suction, where pressure drop and the available NPSH margin govern instead. See our pot strainers for that duty.
Five micron and above with mesh lined elements. Below that the element ceases to be practical to clean and reinstate, and the appropriate selection becomes a replaceable medium: see our cartridge filter housings for fine polishing duty, or bag filter housings where solids loading is higher and operating cost governs.
By differential pressure across the housing, not by elapsed time. Solids loading varies with the process, so a fixed schedule either cleans a clean element or leaves a blinded one in service. We recommend fitting a differential pressure gauge at the time of order so the interval is read directly.
Yes. Send us the original element, or the housing dimensions together with the required mesh, and we will manufacture against it. Element material is selected independently of the body, and internal polishing is available where the duty requires a cleanable finish.
