A basket filter is installed inline ahead of a meter, control valve, heat exchanger or downstream process stage, and retains solids from five micron upward according to the element selected. Manufactured in simplex and duplex configuration, fabricated from plate or supplied in cast construction in the smaller sizes.
Where a strainer is specified to protect a pump from debris, a basket filter is specified to achieve a defined cut point. That distinction governs the design. The element carries a mesh lining sized to the required retention, the housing is dimensioned to give sufficient dirt holding capacity between cleaning intervals, and the clean and dirty pressure drop are both stated in the offer.
Photograph of completed unitA single housing and element. The most economical configuration, applicable where the line may be isolated for the period required to clean or exchange the element.
Two chambers with a changeover valve, permitting element cleaning without interrupting flow. Described in full on the duplex filter page.
Rolled and welded from plate, constructed to ASME Sec VIII Div 1 where the duty requires. Applied in larger sizes, at higher pressures, and wherever a specific material or non standard dimension is called for.
Perforated sheet lined with wire mesh to the required retention, wedge wire where the duty is abrasive or the element is cleaned frequently, or perforated sheet alone for coarse retention.
Where a stated range does not cover a particular requirement, equipment is engineered to the customer specification.
| Size range | 15 mm to 600 mm |
|---|---|
| Construction | Simplex or duplex, fabricated or cast |
| Design code | ASME Sec VIII Div 1, IBR on request |
| Filtration range | 5 micron and above |
| Element type | Mesh lined perforated sheet, wedge wire, or perforated sheet |
| Element free area | Calculated against the operating flow rate and the specified retention |
| End connections | Flanged to ASME B16.5 or equivalent, screwed, socket weld or butt weld |
| Cover type | Bolted, swing bolt, eye bolt or quick opening |
| Options | Differential pressure gauge, drain and vent connections, magnetic insert, lifting davit, jacketing, legs or support lugs |
Alloy steel, duplex stainless and other grades are quoted against the process fluid. Element material is selected independently of the body, and internal polishing is available where the duty requires a cleanable finish.
